Black Walnut – juglans nigra (6-12″)
Zones 4-9: This tree with a mature height of 70 to 100 feet can grow in a wide range of soil types and likes full sun. Highly prized for both its wood and its nuts. One of the most durable hardwoods in the US, the wood is popular in furniture making and flooring. Nut is earthy and sweet and can be used in exactly the same culinary ways as the English walnut. Nuts are an important wildlife food source eaten by species including woodpeckers, foxes and squirrels. Larval host for the Luna moth.
