Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens): Zones 3-8
Belonging in the blueberry family, this woody, evergreen groundcover provides a year-round show of color. Enjoy its pinkish-white flowers in spring and edible berries in autumn. Glossy green foliage turns scarlet in winter. Prefers shade to semi-shade and moist, acidic, humus-rich soils. Space 10-12″ apart. Fresh wintergreen leaves can be steeped in teas or distilled into oil of wintergreen for a variety of flavoring uses. Flowers and fruits attract birds and other wildlife.
